11:55 pm - Announcing the Women of the Gate 11 in 11 Challenge

We're all about promoting the fabulous female characters of the Stargate universe and usually we do so through our usual ficathon and art challenges.  However, today we're announcing a new initiative: our 11 in 11 Challenge.

Can you commit to posting 11 times in 2011?  The posts can be 11 posts of fanfic featuring a Stargate female character as primary point of view, 11 posts of art (icons, banners, wallpapers, fanfic covers, vids, etc.), 11 posts of recommendations for your favourite characters (art, fic, vids), 11 posts of meta about your favourite characters (discussion of episodes featuring female characters as the focus, general commentary on the usage of the female characters, etc) or 11 posts with a combination of these different categories!  You can post on any female character or characters, whether regular, recurring, minor or background.

Just 11 posts in 11 months.  That's one a month. Or 11 posts in February or 11 posts in December.  The timeline is up to you!

The normal ficathon and art challenge rules apply for posting fic and art.  Meta must be about the Stargate ladies specifically but if you want to compare with other shows, within genre, out of genre, or in a wider sociological feminist context that's OK.  Any posts on your own journals/DW, in other ficathons/challenges or to other communities are acceptable so long as they are cross-posted here.

To sign-up or ask a question, just comment to this post, and remember to join the community if you're not already a member!

Signing up!

Are there any rules for the meta posts? I'm a sociology nerd (like, I majored in it and have been struggling for something useful to do with it ever since) and would like to tackle that route for a few posts and was wondering if there were any rules/guidelines for it.

Hi! Welcome on board!

From a meta perspective, the primary rule is that the majority of the meta discussion must be about the ladies of Stargate (either characters or actresses). So if you want to examine the usage of female characters in Stargate, no issues; if you want to examine the usage of female characters in sci-fi/tv, no issues if over 50% of the discussion is about the usage of female characters within Stargate. No bashing allowed (pretty much banned from everything). I'll create a meta tag but otherwise so long as you state upfront its meta, it shouldn't be a problem.

Ooh this advice is good as Im doing a meta piece which is turning out to be huge!! I did Media and Popular culture with Drama at Uni followed by a Film Studies MA! I really wanna get back into my specialty which was the role of women in sci fi and horror!

Signing up. Will squeeze it in around Last Author Standing comms and ScriptFrenzy and NaNoWriMo!

Question: Can I cross post a fic written for a LAS Comm if a female SG character is protagonist, or does it have to be original for this? (e.g., I write a Sam story for stargate_las and after voting is done there, post it here)

Excellent! And yes, happy to have works for other challenges included so long as they are crossposted here. :)
